Dorchester Choral Society

Join Dorchester Choral Society

We are looking for additional Tenors and Basses.

New singers are always welcome; you will be invited to join rehearsals for a couple of weeks before having a straighforward audition.  Everyone is expected to be able to sight read simple music.

Occasionally we may have a waiting list for a particular voice part and we would tell you if this were the case.

If you are a young singer, then check out our scholarship scheme https://www.dorchesterchoralsociety.org/community

Rehearsals

We rehearse weekly in term time on a Monday evening from 7.30 until 9.30 pm at the latest in the United Church, South Street, Dorchester DT1 1BY in preparation for our concerts;  members are encouraged to come to all of these if at all possible.

Most terms we also arrange a Saturday morning rehearsal but we understand that not everyone is able to attend these.

Choir members are expected to participate in all concerts and are asked not to miss more than three regular rehearsals in any concert period.  Those who need to take more time out for work, health or holiday reasons are asked to let the Membership Secretary know and he/she will discuss the situation with the Director of Music.

Subscriptions

An annual subscription is payable at the start of the Autumn term by all members to cover the running costs of the choir.  It is currently £165 but is reviewed annually.  Concessions are available for students and others - please ask.

Music

The choir borrows scores from libraries and can lend them on to members.  For major works choir members often prefer to buy their own clean copies which is made a little cheaper by the choir bulk-buying.

Dress

For concerts, ladies wear long black (dresses or skirts) with tops that have at least three quarter length sleeves. Black dress trousers are also acceptable. Jewellery and accessories should be discreet.

Men wear smart black trousers and shirts with long sleeves but no tie.

Running the Choir

As a registered charity (No 285911) the choir is run in line with Charity Commission requirements.  The committee members who manage the choir's business are the charity's trustees and they are voted for annually at an AGM that takes place in the Autumn.  Please ask the Chair or e-mail enquiries@dorchesterchoralsociety.org if you would like to know more.

The committee is always pleased to have volunteers to help!
